Adverse Child Experiences (ACE's) - Family support services

What we do

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is a complex and specialised area of research and behavioural modification regarding how traumatic events at an early age can affect individuals throughout their lives.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that affect children while growing up, such as:
• child maltreatment;
• being the victim of abuse (physical, sexual and/or emotional);
• a member of the household being in prison;
• domestic violence;
• substance misuse;
• being the victim of neglect (physical and emotional);
• parental abandonment through separation or divorce;
• mental illness.
The term was originally developed in the US for the Adverse Childhood Experiences survey which found that as the number of ACEs increased in the population studied, so did the risk of experiencing a range of health conditions in adulthood. There have been numerous other studies which have found similar findings including in Wales and England .
