Vale of Glamorgan Play Development Team - Children and young people's activities

What we do

We aim to increase the number of children, young people and families who access quality play opportunities. This is achieved in two ways:
(1) By directly delivering community play provision through opportunities such as playschemes, Play Ranger sessions, Forest Schools sessions and events
(2) By facilitating others to deliver - we can assist organisations and individuals to deliver their own provision by helping with areas such as training, mentoring, developing partnerships and provision of equipment.

We are responsible for the delivery of the Families First Holiday Play club during the school holidays for disabled children and young people. These schemes provide a comprehensive service which includes access to personal care, a nurse, specialist equipment and staff who are experienced with working with disabled children and young people.

We are also the lead on the Play Sufficiency Assessment process in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Who do we support

The team work with a variety of residents, internal Council departments, local community groups, schools and national organisations to achieve the aim of the service. Due to the dual role we can be seen to be supporting a vast number of partners to achieve their own aims.
These partners include:
• Service users – local residents including children, young people and families (including families of disabled children)
• Town & Community Councils
• Local resident groups
• Community based organisations
• Schools
• Internal departments such as Family Information Service, Creative Rural Communities, Housing Department, Safer Vale partners, the Events team

Is there a charge to use this service?

Depends - Currently, access to the play activities delivered by the Play Development Team such as Play Rangers, play events and open access playscheme are usually free. There is a small charge per day for our CIW registered Families First Holiday Club for children with disabilities.

For organisations who want the team to deliver on their behalf there is usually a charge to cover the cost of buying in staff and resources. The cost will depend on the service required.

Can anyone use this service?

It depends on which service they wish to access. The majority of the provision is delivered on an open access basis. However, in order to ensure that the appropriate resources are in place, spaces for the Families First Holiday Club must be booked in advance. The parents / guardians can request a place or referrals are received from partners such as the Disability Index Co-ordinator, Child Health and Disability Team and the Specialist Health Visitor.
