Cardiff Parenting -Parents First psychology led service for parents delivered on an individual basis - Family support services

What we do

We aim to help you understand your child’s development and behaviour with Home Liaison Officers (HLOs) and Educational Psychologists. We usually start by visiting you where you live to get to know more about you and your family. It is a chance for you and your child to find out more about us and tell us about what your concerns are. We will agree on a few targets that you would like some ideas on. Each family will have their own personal targets.
We will be available for 4-10 sessions in your home, usually once a week, for about an hour each session. We will bring play activities for your child (if they are not of school age) and discuss ideas with you, the parent. We will practice playing with and talking to your child. We can offer ideas about how to manage or approach things differently, using a fresh pair of eyes. We can help you to find ways to notice and encourage your child’s behaviour and/or skill development.

Who do we support

A specialised service for parents and carers, HLOs are experienced in working with young children and families and have received specialist training. Psychologists are interested in how people think, feel, behave and develop. We work with parent(s) or carer(s) of children and young people aged 0 - 18 years. We become involved with families for lots of different reasons! You might have concerns about your relationship with your child, your child’s behaviour or how your child’s skills are developing.

We often hear from families where the child’s behaviour might be starting to cause a problem for the child, their brothers or sisters, or their parent or carer. Cardiff Parenting is open to any family with a child or young person aged 0-18 living in Cardiff. You could be a parent, a step-parent, a carer or a family member looking after a child. The adult or the child must live in Cardiff. Welsh and other community languages available upon request.
